Postnatal training – when can you return to activity?

Returning to activity after childbirth is a process that needs to be guided wisely, individually and safely — and helping clients through exactly this kind of conscious return to fitness is what I do at Fabryka Ruchu in Rzeszów. The body has gone through enormous changes during pregnancy and birth, so it's worth giving it time and the support of properly chosen training.

First, clearance from your doctor and a postnatal check-up

This is the absolute foundation. Before you return to any physical activity, you must have your doctor's consent and attend a postnatal check-up.

  • The timing of the return is individual and depends, among other things, on the type of birth (vaginal, cesarean) and how it went
  • There is no single universal date — your doctor decides when you can start
  • The postpartum period and healing take time that cannot be "sped up"
  • After a cesarean, the return is usually more cautious and requires longer observation

Tip: don't compare yourself to other mothers or to influencers online. Your pace of return depends solely on your body and your doctor's recommendations.

The pelvic floor and the deep muscles

After pregnancy, working on the foundation is especially important — the pelvic floor muscles and the deep muscles of the trunk. They provide stabilisation and support the body's proper functioning.

  • we start with gentle activation and learning conscious breathing
  • we rebuild stabilisation before moving on to heavier loads
  • we avoid exercises that overload the abdomen early in the process
  • we listen to the body and respond to signals such as pain or a feeling of "heaviness"

Caution with separation of the abdominal muscles

After pregnancy, separation of the rectus abdominis (diastasis) is common. It's a natural phenomenon, but it calls for caution when choosing exercises.

  • some classic exercises (e.g. crunches) can deepen the problem
  • it's worth first assessing the muscles with a physiotherapist or specialist
  • training is chosen individually, depending on the degree of separation
  • a very gradual, controlled return is the key to safe rebuilding

A safe return under a specialist's guidance

Ideally, the return to activity after pregnancy should take place under a specialist's guidance — someone who looks after your technique, pace and individual limitations. As part of medical training at Fabryka Ruchu, I build a plan tailored to your postnatal stage — safely, gradually and with respect for everything your body has been through.

This article is for informational purposes only and does not replace medical consultation. Always return to training after pregnancy with your doctor's consent, individually and preferably under a specialist's guidance. Every birth and every woman is different.
